SquashGym Men fall at final hurdle

SquashGym Men fall at final hurdle at National Club Champs

The ‘Higgins’ sponsored SquashGym team have gone down in the final of the National Club Champs (Cousins Shield) 3 – 1 yesterday against Remuera from Auckland. The team put in a top effort against a team stacked with A1 players but the Aucklander’s proved too good on the day.

In a rematch from last year’s final, SquashGym didn’t get off to good start with Kent Darlington going down 3 – 0 to Phil Buske. Ant McLeod then got the team back on track with a 3 – 1 over Matt Anderson. The number 1’s were on next with Kashif Shuja from Remuera taking on SquashGym’s Josh Greenfield. Greenfield got off to a great start showing his fantastic shot play he is renowned for, picking up the first set. Kashif then demonstrated why he is ranked 61 in the world by grinding out the next three sets to take it 3 -1. It was now up to veteran Mike Mc Sherry to keep the tie alive for SquashGym. He was up against Alex Grayson, currently ranked 4th in NZ and 20 years his junior. McSherry at times displayed his trickery and trade mark kill shots that have made him one of NZ’s top players for the last two decades. But Grayson proved too fit and got too many shots back to come out on top and win 3 – 0.

The Surprise package of the tournament was the SquashGym women’s team. They were seeded 6th however upset third seeds and last year’s champions Remuera in the first round. They won the play off for 3rd and 4th 3 – 1 against Hamilton. Wins went to Danielle Fourie, Stephanie Smith and Sharon Patterson. This was a top effort from the girls who had two of their players pull out the week leading up with sickness and injury meaning they had no reserves for the weekend.

The Men’s development team lost 3 – 2 in the playoff for 9th and 10th against Te Puke. The team played well all weekend and managed to hold their seeding of 10. Number one Glenn Carson was in fine form throughout going unbeaten against some quality opposition. The side had four players aged 21 or younger and the tournament proved a good learning experience for them.
