Round 5 of the Central Squash Protecta Insurance Challenge Series was hosted by the Wanganui Squash club on Wednesday night.
Higgins Contractors and Doyle & Associates met in a top of the table that would decide who would finish the round robin phase in top position. Higgins retained their unbeaten record through pool play with a 3/1 win over the home team. Glenn Carson and Justin Brown scored solid four set wins over Jonathon Picaud and Mike Stagg respectively, while the doubles was a see saw battle with Higgins pair of Mark Gunning and Ken Mair taking a 2 set lead before John Rostenburg and Daniel Juno staged a comeback to force the match into a fifth set. The fifth was a tight affair with Higgins just edging out the winners 11/9. Malcolm Wyeth and Dylan Tasker fought out what turned out to be the match of the night, with Wyeth coming back from 2 sets down to hold several match balls in the fifth set. Tasker who squandered several matchballs at 10/7 in the fifth regained his composure to take the match 16/14 and pick up the player of the night award in the process.
GSA Design took on Inspire Net needing a good win to challenge Doyle and Associates for a place in the final, but came up short being beaten 3/1. Josh Greenfield scored GSA's solitary win with a convincing 3 nil win over Tom Nash. Ben Murphy scored a 3 nil win over Tyron Fourie while Geoff Spencer had a four set win over Regan Smith. The doubles match between GSA's Grant Smith and Rob Brownrigg against Jason Burton-Brown and Roger McLeod resulted in a four set win to Inspire Net to seal the match for Inspire Net and prevent GSA Design from moving up the table.
Speights and Automotive Direct fought out the last match of the night with Speights leaapfrogging Auotmotive direct into 4th spot with a 3/1 win. For SpeightsYeshan Ekanayake scored a 3/0 win over Danielle Fourie, while Jason Fletcher had a good win over Ant Rountree. Joseph Watts was too strong for Matt Spooner getting Automotive Direct on the board with a 4 set win. The doubles match went to Speights Dave Clifford and Nick Reed, in four sets over Alan Rigby and Croyden Rutherford.
