Round Two Protecta Insurance Central Squash Player Series

The Wanganui Squash Club hosted an exciting and close encounter round for the second of six in the Protecta Insurance Player Series last night. Doyle & Associates tipped over top of the table Higgins Contractors beat Speights coming out as 3/1 victors.  Kent Darlington and Dylan Tasker played solid enough to win their matches in four sets against Matt Spooner and Stephen Bennett respectively while Yeshan Ekanayake put Speights on the board with a three set win over Daniel Juno. Going on last was the doubles match with the Doyles & Associate pairing of Nick Caton /John Rostenburg needing at least two sets to make it a points countback if they were to lose against the higher ranked Dave Clifford/Phil Blumont.  After being two sets to one up they did dropp the fourth but then came storming back to take the fifth and give the team a fantastic 3/1 win.

The second match up saw Higgins Contractors beat GSA Design again 3/1 in matches and continue their march at the top of the table. Higgins wins came from Malcolm Wyeth who continues to show his good form, over Grant Smith in four sets and Justin Brown had a three set win over Regan Smith.  Once again it was the doubles combination of Mark Gunning/Ken Mair who played outstandingly well to win 11/9 in the fifth set against Rob Brownrigg/Karl Fraser and give their team a 5pt lead on the points table.  GSA Design’s only win was to Josh Greenfield over Glenn Carson.

The last match up was between Automotive Direct and Inspire Net.  This proved to be a fantastic match up and went right down to the wire. Automotive Direct’s Ant Rountree got the team of to winning start with a great three nil result over the higher graded Ben Murphy.  Then Geoff Spencer got one back for Inspire Net with a three set win over Danielle Fourie.  Next up the battle between the number ones saw Automotive Direct’s Tim Preston show he still is a force to be reckon with.  Up against the youngster Tom Nash he came back from two sets to one to win in five.  On last was the doubles match up and this proved to be the highlight of the night.  Inspire Net’s Marius Fourie/Shaun Grant picked up the Liquor King Player of the Night award for their efforts against Croyden Rutherford/Alan Rigby.  After being down two sets to one and saving match balls in the fourth set they grounded it out to win the fourth 13/11 and the fifth set 12/10 to at least tie it up at two all in matches.  In the end though it wasn’t quite enough as after being tied at eight all in sets, the points totalled 159 to 157 in the favour of Automotive Direct .
