Protecta Series Round 4

Round 4 of the Central Squash Protecta Insurance Challenge Series was hosted by the Masterton Squash club on Wednesday night.

Top of the table Higgins Contractors took on bottom placed team Inspire Net, and scored a convincing 3/1 win, with solid wins in straight games to Malcolm Wyeth and Justin Brown for Higgins over Ben Murphy and Justin Brown. The other two matches were much closer affairs with Higgins Mark Gunning and Steve Gray taking the doubles 11/9 in the fifth over Jason Burton Brown and Roger McLeod. Tom Nash got Inspire on the board with a come from behind win over Glenn Carson.

Team GSA took on Speights in a middle of the table battle with both teams looking to make up ground on the competition leaders. Team GSA took the honours with a 3/1 win. Tyron Fourie reversed recent results against Yeshan Ekanayake with a good 3/0 win. Regan Smith won a hard fought 5 set battle over Matt Ratcliffe to score his first win at this level and continue his rapid rise up the grades this season. Grant Smith and Rob Brownrigg proved to be too good for Dave Clifford and Phil Blumont. Speights solitary win came in unfortunate circumstances for team GSA, where in the match between Josh Greenfield and Tim Preston with Greenfield unable to take the court due to illness.

2nd placed team Doyle and Associates took on Automotive Direct in the nights final match up, which saw some hard fought matches and went down to the wire. Automotive Directs Joseph Watts took the court 1st against Jonathan Picaud and recorded a straight sets victory. Next up Danielle Fourie took on Doyles Dylan Tasker, and took the first game before Tasker ground out a 4 set win. Steven Bennett and Mike Stagg then fought out a tough five setter, with Bennett taking a 2 set to love lead, before Stagg fought back to level at 2 all. Bennett however regained control to run out the winner, 11/5 in the fifth set to give Automotive Direct a 2/1 lead. That left the tie hanging in the balance with the doubles set to decide the match. Craig Denny and Croyden Rutherford took a 2 nil lead, before John Rostenburg and Daniel Juno stormed back to win 11/8 in the fifth and pick up the player of the night award for their efforts. It wasn't quite enough for Doyles however with the 2 sets won by Automotive Direct being enough to secure a win by one set on games countback.
