Shield Retained

After some massive battles and close games through the day Central beat Waikato 14-10 in their annual representative fixture to take the Leevey Shield!

On the 20th May a team of six men and six ladies from across the district made the trip to Taumarunui to battle it our with Waikato – the team consisted of Jordan Bell, Matthew Ratcliffe, James van Kerkhoff, Maximus Mathews, Brodie Bennett and Vaughan Robinson for the men alongside Tamsyn Leevey, Abbie Homes, Leonie Marshall, Fiona Gifford-Moore, Emma Rowe and Anneka Weterman for the ladies.

The morning session started strong with Central going into half time with a lead of seven matches to five. After a quick refuel with some delicious lunch put on by our hosts at Taumarunui it was time to get into the second half of the days where the seedings kicked in and some tough battles ensued!

It came down to the wire as players on both sides fought for the match and game wins as it can always come down to every point counts! Once the last games were played and the count was done Central came through to hold onto the shield for another year with a 14-10 match win over Waikato.

Overall it was a great day with some awesome squash and although the Shield might have mysteriously disappeared at the end of the night we know it’ll reappear in time for us to defend our title again next year!
